Lodging:

Hyde Park Neighborhood (where workshop is located):

Hyatt Place Chicago-South/University Medical Center, 5225 S. Harper Avenue, Chicago, Illinois, 60615, Tel: +1 773-752-5300

http://www.chicagosouthuniversity.place.hyatt.com/en/hotel/home.html

This is brand new and getting great reviews.  The location is perfect for pleasant 5-block walk to the workshop and there are restaurants all along 53rd Street.  It is pricier.  However, a great place to share a room–rooms were designed for families coming to see university students for graduations, etc., so plenty of room.

Ramada Inn, 4900 South Lake Shore Drive, 60615, 773-288-5800, $100-$130, 11 blocks (>1 mile) from studio/workshop location.  WARNING:  this has not always been a positive experience for workshop participants.  Problems with curtains falling down and poor desk service, but the breakfast place connected has been fine, and there is a shuttle (Omega, see below) that takes you directly from here to both airports in the area.

Downtown—Chicago Loop:

Here are hotels I know that get good reviews and have more reasonable rates, and are relatively convenient for getting to the workshop.  Downtown is 6 miles away and it takes 15-20 minutes to drive depending on where you are and traffic.

O’Hare Airport Hotels:

If you have a choice, fly into Midway Airport instead of O’Hare Airport.  O’Hare is farther away and has more traffic issues (45-90 min from O’Hare to studio/workshop location).  Even if you have to fly into O’Hare, consider having a room at Midway if nothing is available in Hyde Park.  There are shuttles between the two airports and then it will be a shorter distance in the morning before the workshop, etc.

Holiday Inn Chicago O’Hare Kennedy, 8201 West Higgins Road, 773-693-2323.

O’Hare Marriott, 8535 West Higgins Road, 773-693-4444.

O’Hare Hilton, at airport, 773-686-0072.

Midway Airport Hotels:

Midway is closer to the studio/workshop location (20-30 minutes drive) and a smaller, easier to navigate, airport.  A cab from Midway will be cheaper than a cab from O’Hare also.  There is a transport system, Omega that will take you to the Ramada in Hyde Park where you could get a cab, walk, take a bus, or get a ride from another workshop participant to the studio/workshop.  It is also sometimes possible to get a specific location drop off by Omega so ask for that, too.  That is $5 more than being taken to the Ramada.

Midway Hotel Center, 6500 South Cicero Avenue (2 blocks south of Midway Airport), 1-888-643-4667. This number can hook you up with 7 different hotel/motels including Marriott, Fairfield, Hilton Garden, Hampton Inn, Holiday Inn and Holiday Inn Express.

Holiday Inn Express, 6500 South Cicero Avenue, direct line, 773-436-0202, continental breakfast, TGI Fridays restaurant next door, 2 blocks south of Midway Airport (in Midway Hotel Center).

Hampton Inn, 6540 South Cicero Avenue, direct line, 773-838-1900, 2 blocks south of Midway Airport (in Midway Hotel Center).

Transportation:

Omega Airport Service:  773-483-6634.  They can be used from O’Hare to Hyde Park or Midway to Hyde Park and the reverse.  Must call for a reservation when you are traveling from Hyde Park to the airports.  Cost is $17/person between Midway and Hyde Park.  They drop off at Ramada Inn and at International House in Hyde Park (only 2 blocks away from studio/workshop location).

RTA/CTA/Metra Information (bus routes, train schedules):  312-836-7000.  If you are trying to get schedules from the train from downtown to the 57th Street, you nned to follow promps for the METRA train schedule.  The entrance/exit is 2 blocks from the studio/workshop location.
